June is Men’s Health month; designed to build awareness of men’s preventable health issues and encourage early detection and treatment among men and boys. The dedicated month (and in particular the week preceding Father’s Day) started in 1994 by a Senate Joint Resolution sponsored by Bob Dole which is recognized in all 50 states – and globally as well.

“Good health is one of life’s greatest blessings,” said Rick Perry, Texas Governor in 2013. “As we prepare to celebrate Father’s Day, I encourage men to recognize the importance of seeking preventative, timely and appropriate medical care. Let all of us – both men and women – remain mindful of the important role preventative medical care, daily exercise, a balanced diet and refraining from smoking can have in our lives and the lives of our loved ones.”

Men on average still have a life expectancy of seven years less than women and a significant number of male related health problems such as pronlstate cancer, testicular cancer, infertility, and colon cancer, could be detected and treated if men’s awareness of these problems was more pervasive.

In particular, prostate cancer is at almost epidemic proportions for men, with the likelihood of a man developing prostate cancer at 1 in 11. And in African-American men, the US has the highest incidence of prostate cancer in the entire world.

The goal of the month, and the designated blue ribbon, is to educate both the public and health care providers about the importance of early detection of male health problems which will result in drastically reduced rates of mortality for prostate cancer and other preventable diseases.

In addition, the month is dedicated to educating men on creating a healthier lifestyle. As Governor Perry noted a healthier lifestyle includes daily exercise and a balanced diet, among other activities. This healthy lifestyle should include regular massage and other efforts to reduce stress and relieve the simple aches and pains from regular exercise. At Hand & Stone, we encourage men to consider massage as a healthy lifestyle choice, not just a luxury.

Hand & Stone is based on the concept of making massage convenient and affordable for everyone. Already, hundreds of thousands of men have visited Hand & Stone and many have become members, getting regular massage treatments that are part of their healthy lifestyle. To get you or the men in your life to try regular massage, many Hand & Stone locations are now offering $10 off gift cards and $20 off spa packages.
